What Is Plastic Injection Molding?

plastic mold Injection Molding is a fast growing process that has gained a lot of momentum in a very short span of time. There are various advantages of using plastic mould injection molding process. The major advantage is that it is very reliable and cost-effective. Also, this process produces smooth and finished products that require no further finishing. The equipments involved in plastic mold injection molding are very sophisticated and costly. They are known as injection molding machines. The machinery used are also heavy and some even weigh up to tons of kilogram. But only when these kinds of machines are used the final product turns out to be a quality product. This is so because the plastic molds are fed into these machines and they are heated until they become fluid. This signifies that the machines should bear up high temperature and thus comes the requirement of sophisticated equipments.

The plastic mould when poured, takes the shape of the cavity or the mold used and get solidified or settled in it. After some time molded material is ejected out from the cavity. The same cavity can be used to make any number of molds. The mold can be of any preferred shape. The mold has two components namely the injection mold and the ejector mold. The melted plastic mold resin is transferred into the mold and the ejector mold helps in ejecting the plastic mold part after it is solidified in the mold without any damage using ejecting pins.

The next procedure is the use of hydraulic or mechanical pressure. Air gets trapped inside the mold and this is done to release the air. This is known as the dwelling process. The air cavities are pushed to one corner of the mold when pressure is applied. Then the fluid is allowed to solidify and the mold is cooled. Finally the solidified plastic mold part is taken out from the mold either manually or automatically.

The plastic mold parts experience a change in their physical as well as chemical properties once the cooling process takes place. The most eminent design contemplation of the plastic mold injection molding process is the width of the mold. Usually a mold with a uniform wall thickness is favored. This helps in reducing the change in mechanical properties of the plastic mold part.

Candle Making Molds – Embossed Texture

Corrugated cardboard is an inexpensive way to make simple molds and give very stylish results, with the ridged surface of the cardboard embossed on the candle. Spraying the corrugated cardboard before you pour in the wax helps to prevent the wax from sticking to it as it sets.

You will need:

  • clean plastic container lid
  • bradawl (awl)
  • corrugated cardboard
  • scissors
  • water or silicone oil spray
  • double-sided tape
  • mold seal
  • primed wick
  • wicking needle
  • measuring cup (1 cup)
  • scales
  • paraffin wax
  • stearin (10% of quantity of wax)
  • double boiler
  • wax dye
  • wooden spoon
  • wax thermometer

1. To make the base of the mold, pierce the middle of the plastic lid with a bradawl (awl) to make a hole big enough to take the wick. Cut a rectangle of corrugated cardboard to size with the width matching the candle height.

2. Spray the cardboard with water or silicone oil to moisten it. Roll it into a cylinder and join the sides with double-sided tape.

3. Place the cardboard cylinder centrally over the plastic lid. Seal the join with mold seal – the mold must be absolutely watertight.

4. Cut a length of primed wick. Attach one end to a wicking needle, pushing the other end through the hold in the base of the mold. Let the Needle rest on top of the cardboard cylinder. Seal the hole in the base with mold seal.

5. Measure the required quantities of paraffin wax and stearin. Melt the stearin in the top of a double boiler. Add the dye until it is the right color, stirring until thoroughly blended. Add the paraffin wax and heat until it has melted and reaches 180 F. (82 C.) Pour the wax into the mold, almost to the rim.

6. Leave the candle to cool. Top up around the wick with more molten wax when a well forms as the wax shrinks. When the candle is completely set, peel off the tap and mold seal and remove the cardboard. Trim any excess wick.

A selection of light and heavyweight corrugated cardboard can be used to create a group of candles with different sized ridges. The natural color of the candles and cardboard look very contemporary, and packed into a complementary box, they would make a wonderful hand-make gift.
